The reason this blew up as a story is obvious - the visuals are perfect for a newscast, it's timely to the season (especially since there's always a story about the most elaborate Holiday Lights display during Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa), and they actually have video of the woman cutting the mannequins down.
